Grocery stores first appeared at the beginning of the previous century, when people shopped daily due to the lack of refrigeration. Products had to be consumed the same day, making the wide variety on offer even more remarkable. Unlike today’s supermarkets, everything was sold in bulk rather than pre-packaged—legumes in sacks, oil in large tanks (with customers bringing their own bottles), and goods like sugar and rice measured by hand using traditional scales.

Shopping was a personal experience. Grocers would scoop products into paper bags, often displaying sacks outside to attract customers. With few households owning telephones, orders were sometimes collected directly from customers’ homes, with deliveries made on foot or by bicycle. This tradition reflects a simpler, more connected way of serving the community.
